Cupuacu whipped body butter recipe

Apr 25, 2022 | Body care, Formulations

Today I want to share with you an anhydrous whipped body butter recipe with cupuacu butter. It has a wonderful deep chocolate scent, has a very light feeling on the skin and does not leave a greasy film. This is want we want in a body butter.

Formulating a hydrating hand lotion

1. MELTING POINT

This whipped body butter recipe is more suited for winter season as it has very low amount of wax. As this body butter made only from oils, butters and waxes we have to consider a melting point of the final product.

If it will be kept in a warmer environment, it will start to melt and the butter will lose its creamy, buttery texture. However, it will stay the same if it will be kept in a colder place.

At 24°C temperature the body butter still has its texture, but hotter than that and the butter will turn into a creamy oil (not sure if you want this).

I will write suggestions at the end of this whipped body butter recipe to make it more suitable for hotter environment, but I haven’t tested that, so you have to test it yourself.

2. CUPUACU BUTTER

Cupuacu butter is a very interesting cosmetic butter that is similar to cocoa butter. They both have chocolate scent, but cupuacu butter’s scent has some caramel undertones, is deeper and lasts longer.

This butter is rather hard butter in texture, but leaves no greasy film on the skin. But it can trap a lot of water molecules in the upper layer of the skin and moisturize it. And this helps to keep the skin smooth and maintain its elasticity.

4. PROCESS

  1. Weigh all phase A ingredients into a bowl or beaker and heat them in a water bath.
  2. When everything has melted get the beaker out of the water bath and stir it until it has started to solidify. Then place it in a refrigerator or freezer.
  3. Wait for 5-10 minutes and get it out to whip it. The mixture should still be soft, not hard. If it has hardened too much – mash it with a metal spoon or something similar. And then whip it.
  4. Add phase B ingredients and whip it.
  5. Place the beaker in a refrigerator/freezer once again, wait for 5-10 minutes and whip again.
  6. Scoop the whipped body butter and place it into a jar.

5. MAKING SUBSTITUTIONS

  • You can increase rice bran wax amount up to 10 %. Reduce the amount of liquid oil.

  • You can use behenyl or cetyl alcohol instead of rice bran wax up to 15%. Reduce the amount of liquid oil.

  • Choose a different medium or lightweight oil instead of macadamia nut oil – grapeseed oil, rice bran oil etc. For a very light version you can try IPM (isopropyl myristate), capric/caprylic triglycerides, coco-caprylate, C13-15 alkane, squalane.

  • Use a different fragrance oil or essential oil. If you want body butter without additional fragrance – increase the amount of liquid oil.

  • You can choose a different mica or don’t use it at all.
