Behenyl alcohol in cosmetics

1. WHAT IS BEHENYL ALCOHOL AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

Behenyl alcohol is actually a solid saturated fatty acid alcohol that softens the skin, gives some detangling to the hair and it is a viscosity builder. It is also an emollient and acts very differently than drying alcohols such as ethanol, propanol.

In addition to this, this fatty alcohol forms a protective layer on the skin, which then keeps the skin moisturized and prevents water loss. It also soothes and softens the skin.

In hair care it acts as an emollient and smoothens the hair fibers leaving them more manageable.

Behenyl alcohol also has some antiviral properties, so it can be used as an additional ingredient to boost preservation system. It can also be formulated for lip products, especially when dealing with herpes virus.

2. STRUCTURE OF BEHENYL ALCOHOL

The chemical structure of behenyl alcohol is rather simple and similar to cetyl alcohol. It has 22 carbon atoms in its structure and it is longer than cetyl alcohol. The -COOH part that is visible in the chemical structure shows a chemical group of acids.

So, to put it simply it has a saturated fatty acid backbone with 22 carbon atoms. Because of the high number of carbon, it has a higher melting point when comparing to cetyl alcohol.

3. Basic properties of behenyl alcohol

INCI Behenyl alcohol
Function It is an emollient and works as a viscosity enhancer, stabilizer
Usage rate 1-25%
Origin Mustard oil - possibly erucic acid goes through hydrogenation process.
Appearance Waxy small beads
Melting temperature 64-67°C (147-153°F)
Solubility Oil
Skin type All skin types
Shelf life Store somewhere in a cool, dark and dry environment. It should last at least 4 years. Then it should be retested.
When to include it It has to be melted
How much do you need it? 100g (3.3 oz.) would be enough
Alternatives Cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, but the skin feel will not bee the same.

4. APPEARANCE AND SKIN FEEL OF IT

Behenyl alcohol is similar in appearance with cetyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol as all of them are waxy saturated fatty acids. Though it usually comes in smaller white beads than cetyl alcohol. It has no scent or a fairly noticeable one.

In the lotions it improves the appearance and feel of emulsions and adds glide.

5. STABILITY AND HOW TO WORK WITH BEHENYL ALCOHOL

As this is a saturated waxy alcohol, the stability of the ingredient is very good. The shelf life should be around 36 months (up to 3 years) when the ingredient is kept in a dark cool place.

Because behenyl comes in small pellets, it has to be heated until everything is melted through. The melting temperature is quite high – around 64-68°C (147-154°F). It is usually heated in the oil phase.

6. What can be made with it?

As behenyl alcohol is an emollient and viscosity enhancer, it is usually used in emulsions. Though it can be used in anhydrous products as well.

Some of the ideas what can be made with this ingredient:

  • lotions (face, hand, body)
  • conditioners
  • anhydrous body butters
  • lip balms
  • hair masks
  • SPF
  • Cleansing balms
  • Solid shampoo bars
  • Solid conditioners

7. WHERE TO BUY BEHENYL ALCOHOL?

Behenyl alcohol is a bit more luxurious ingredient in a sense that it gives superior feeling to the products compared to cetyl alcohol and it is also more expensive. Because of this, it is also a bit harder to find, but there are still some suppliers that have it. Here are several of them, but it is not limited list (these are the places that I have found):
